DIY Mosaic Plant Pots – How to Make Them
Making DIY mosaic plant pots is easy, if you follow these simple steps to make your own mosaic pot, then you can show it off in your own home or garden:
Step One: Select a pot. This can be somewhat tricky, you want to find some pots, such as ones made from clay or terracotta that are fairly inexpensive and easy to work with. Unlike pots which are made from porcelain, terracotta and clay provide the much needed traction that is required to stick the various mosaic pieces into them due in part to its rough nature, as compared to the smooth, glazed porcelain pots. Pots that are simple in shape or that have very little contours are also easier to work with, although your choice of pots can accommodate a bevy of shapes and sizes once you get the hang of it.
Step Two: Obtain the pieces for your mosaic. This can be done in various ways, the easiest being to purchase prepared ceramic or stone chips at craft stores or hobby shops. Another great way to go about obtaining pieces for a mosaic plant pot is to recycle broken china. How? By simply breaking them into manageable pieces carefully by placing chipped or broken ceramics into three layers of Ziploc, or a thick burlap bag and gently smashing it.
Step Three: Design your mosaic. Before you prep the pot of your choice with your choice of binding mixture, usually tile grout, you should design your mosaic. This can be any geometric shape, or a free-form shape. Go with whatever suits your fancy to make it uniquely your own creation.
Step Four: Set your pieces. This can be done in two ways. The first method is the grout – apply method which involves putting a dab of grout or some other adhesive to the back of a mosaic piece and sticking into the pot. Repeat the process until the whole of the pot, or your chosen part of it, is completely covered. It is then left to dry and the crevasses are then covered with grout, which is then sanded and polished, or it can be left as-is. The second method is the paste-all method which involves covering selected areas of the surface of the pot with grout, and then applying your chosen mosaic pieces to the still moist grout.
Choose whichever method works best for you. Make sure that you allow your pot to dry completely and cure for at least several weeks before you employ it for planting, as the chemicals in grout and other adhesives can be detrimental to plant health. And this is how you go about making a DIY mosaic plant pot! Enjoy!
